This project involved the construction of a 200-bed addition to an existing 250-bed nursing home facility, which overlooks the Great South Bay. The addition consisted of two, 2-story wings attached to the original building, which now serves as the central common core. The addition provides the center with an additional 85,000-SF of space and is steel framed with steel stud and gypsum sheeting exterior wall system covered by brick veneer.
Additionally, 15,000-SF of the existing core, which includes areas for kitchen, chapel, dining, recreational and therapy, was renovated while the facility remained occupied and in full service. The renovations required extensive electrical, water and telephone services as well as upgrades to the sanitary sewage systems. The scope included enlarging and modernizing the existing kitchen in order to handle the current and future needs of residents and staff members. The new heating and air conditioning systems utilize through-the-wall heat pumps in the resident rooms and roof top equipment for the common areas.
Extensive site work required the expansion of the parking lot and the addition of a road to provide auxiliary access to the facility for emergency vehicles. The landscaping of the facility lends itself to promote patient, therapy and rehabilitation.
